Creations from man made objects discarded as refuse and reinterpreted to form objects found in nature are the inspirations for my art. The simple spoon forms the body of a rainbow trout; a discarded children's toy becomes the foundation for a moose; oil cans transform into armadillos. Building on that the reclaimed objects are then transformed from their mechanized human intentions into organic figures found in nature.

A new product line?

As they say desperation leads to innovation - I think I have stumbled on to a new Product line - Wearable Art!

While creating a piece for a recent holiday party I was intrigued by how the handle on a tea strainer can be easily made into a clip for a Lapel Pin or Brooch. The first piece was a hit and even better worked!
I have been working on other ideas and designs  - the one picture above is based on that original idea as a commissioned piece requested by a wonderful client.

Time to Re-Group

People are always asking - Where do you work what is your Shop/Studio like? Every once in a while I will even get a request for a studio tour to which I always reluctantly decline.
So, here you go - actually this is a terrible example but yet a peek into where my sculptures originate.
This is actually what 4 months of feverishly working on various pieces will get you!
Well  - me anyway!
Now that things have quieted down a bit I have decided to take a brief hiatus from building and attempt to organize this chaos.
So, this is my self imposed project for today, this weekend - Hell, next week!

Oh - and never mind the grinder clamped in the vise - you didn't see that!

Knock on Every Door and Always Aim High What's the Worst that can Happen?

I know it is Cliche but it is true. I spent the day yesterday in Philadelphia checking out various Galleries. There is one I was particularly interested in the Snyderman-Works Galleries one of the oldest and most prestigious galleries in Philadelphia. So, after a bit of greatly appreciated advise from a fellow artist friend I walked in the door! They are currently running a Found Object Exhibition in the gallery and the plan was to introduce myself and begin to build a relationship in hope of being considered for inclusion in next years show.  Well, beyond anything I could have ever expected my Muskie was selected from my portfolio by the gallery director to be added to the current show that has already opened! Needless to say I am honored and humbled to be included in the same company of the many incredibly talented and nationally know artists currently in the exhibition.
All of this has proven to me that it is true that it never hurts to ask or just walk through that door what IS the worst that can happen - you will never know until you try!

The current show - Recovered Delights, The Inventive World of Found Object Sculpture - runs through August 15th and offers an incredible collection of contemporary found object sculpture from an array of amazingly talented artists.
Definitely one to check out!

Check out this Score!

Yes - stuff like this really gets the wheels turning in my head. Last year at the PA Guild's Lancaster show I had the honor of meeting Tom and Joan they were from far Eastern PA (as I know know). Noticing the Crow I had on display she mentioned she had a "few" old typewriters from her family in the basement and if interested I was welcome to them. Of Coarse I am I replied as they are not so easy to come by - so FINALLY after all this time (my fault) I made it out to pick these up and I am Ecstatic - they are great and I can not wait to get them ripped apart and start creating. Best part is that for Thanks/Payment for the machines we worked out a barter agreement and she will soon be a proud new owner of an original piece created from the typewriters and themed around her interests and the past family members who once used these machines. I think she said it best and that was that it is a "win-win for all!" and I have to agree.
